Giant-killing G's make quickfire start

GODALMING Town produced the Ryman League's top giant-killing in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup yesterday (Saturday).
The Division One South club converted a sizzling start into a 2-1 home victory over high-flying Conference Notth side Worcester City, a club famed for once knocking Liverpool out of the competition.
A header by Dan Read and a volley by Scott Harris put G’s 2-0 up after 11 minutes and Worcester could not respond until Luke Corbett netted in the 90th minute, too late to deny the Surrey club their day of glory and £4,500 in prize money.
They are one of eight Ryman League clubs definitely through to the next round. That total will rise after seven replays, two of them all-Ryman affairs.
Also through from Division One South are Bognor, who brought a halt to Maidstone’s spectacular run with a 3-2 victory at Central Park. Stones had scored nine goals in each of their two previous ties but they were undone this time by goalkeeping errors. Terry Dodd put Rocks ahead after 19 minutes and made it 2-0 four minutes later after a fumble by home keeper Charlie Mitten, who also gave away the third goal soon after the interval when he let a Nick Reeves back-pass evade him for an own goal.
Tom Mills pulled one back in the 55th minute and Baff Addae, the FA’s Player of the Round for his four goals in the previous tie, scored again in the 83rd minute. It was Maidstone’s 20th goal in the competition but it was not enough to save them.
Division One North side Redbridge claimed their second Premier Division scalp with a 1-0 home win over Bury Town. Ben Bradbury converted a penalty, as he had done in both previous rounds, in the fourth minute and the Motormen defended well to retain the lead.
Also through from the North division are Sudbury, who put their poor league form behind them to win 2-0 at Division One South side Merstham. The hosts were denied several times in the early stages by Sudbury keeper Danny Gay, who was rewarded when skipper Nathan Clarke scored six minutes after the interval. A late strike by David Lorimer settled it.
Four Premier sides are through, three of them comfortably. But Hendon had to work hard for their 2-1 victory at battling Spartan South Midlands League side Oxhey Jets.
Hendon edged in front on the stroke of half-time when Elliott Charles converted a cross from Greg Ngoyi, only for Lewis Putman to square matters two minutes after the restart. Ngoyi’s goal on the hour was the decider.
Lowestoft ended a miserable run of six successive penalty misses when Joe Francis gave them a tenth-minute lead from the spot against Southern League Premier table-proppers Hemel Hempstead. Matt Nolan added two goals before half-time and 3-0 was the final score.
Billericay went through by the same margin at Chipstead, of Division One South. Rob Swaine gave them a half-time lead which was stretched by Dave Knight, with a penalty, and Harrison Chatting.
Cray hammered Kent League side Erith Town 5-0 on Sunday. Tommy Whitnell put them ahead after 25 minutes with his fourth FA Cup goal of the season and ninth in all.
Lewis Perkins netted his first of the season on 34 minutes and struck again two minutes later as Cray took command.
Dominic Sterling added a fourth just before the hour and Perkins completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes left.
Another Premier side in the hat on Monday are Concord, but only after pulling off a great escape at Eastern Counties League leaders Wroxham. The Beachboys trailed 2-0 going into added time but a Steve King header gave them hope and Kyle Asante completed the comeback as he made it 2-2.
Leatherhead, too, got themselves off the hook and once again they had big-occasion specialist Kev Terry to thank. Terry’s late hat-trick lifted Tanners into the Premier Division with a 4-3 play-off win over Dulwich at the end of last season and it was his last-minute goal, his first of this campaign, which earned them a 1-1 draw at in-form Southern League side Biggleswade Town.
Two other Premier sides must replay against Southern League opposition and both had to come from behind to do it. East Thurrock were 3-1 down at home to St Albans, despite taking an eighth-minute lead through Kris Newby, but Petrit Elbi struck in added time at the end of the first half and Kye Ruel (pictured above, courtesy of Mikey Cartwright, as he shapes to shoot) made it 3-3 on 52 minutes.
All the goals came in a 17-minute second-half spell at Burnham where Horsham, twice behind, grabbed a second chance with a Craig Davies effort and a Tony Nwachukwu penalty.
The scorching conditions did not make it easy for anyone and the game seemingly worst affected was at Whitehawk. The Sussex club now face a long trek to Maldon for a replay on Tuesday after their all-Ryman clash finished scoreless and almost chanceless.
Two other Ryman sides also slogged out a goalless draw, though Margate can only blame poor finishing for their failure to see off visiting Thamesmead. Matt Bodkin came closest for the Premier side, hitting a post.
There were no goals, either, at Worthing, who were held by Kent League outfit Beckenham. Worthing’s Tony Timms and Beckenham’s Alfie Nunn were dismissed soon after half-time. Rebels almost snatched it at the death, but visiting keeper Nick Blue saved well from Steve Metcalf and Jamie Brotherton.
Premier Division Aveley suffered a shock defeat at Combined Counties League side Hanworth Villa. Fresh from an impressive midweek league victory at Canvey, Millers hit the woodwork through Reece Morgan and Joey May but were beaten by Levi King’s lone goal in the 70th minute.
Hythe almost got themselves out of trouble as they went down 2-1 at Southern League strugglers North Greenford.
Trailing to a goal in each half by Aaron McLeish, they pulled one back through Brendon Cass in the second minute of added time and then found the net again, only for the effort to be disallowed.
Canvey dominated their home game against Conference North side Bishop’s Stortford but found debutant goalie Jordan Archer, on loan from Tottenham, in unbeatable form. So Michael Bakare’s 55th-minute goal gave Stortford a 1-0 victory.
Another Conference North side, Nuneaton, had less trouble as they went through at Needham Market. Two goals by Danny Mitchley in the first 17 minutes set up their eventual 3-0 win.
The last three Ryman League champions, all now in Conference South, enjoyed comfortable home wins over current Ryman clubs.
Less than a fortnight ago former Football League star Nicky Forster scored two early goals for Sussex County League club Lingfield in a replay at Horsham but then hobbled off and could not prevent Horsham fighting back to win.
On Saturday Forster was managing 2009 Ryman champions Dover for the first time and saw former Billericay striker Billy Bricknell score twice in their 3-0 home win over Carshalton.
The third-minute dismissal of Danny Leech effectively ended Harrow’s hopes at 2010 champions Dartford, who cruised to a 5-0 victory.
Leroy Griffiths netted four times for reigning champions Sutton as they whipped Division One South leaders Dulwich 5-1. Nyren Clunis pulled it back to 2-1 early in the second half but Griffiths quickly notched his third goal to kill off any prospect of a comeback.
Waltham Forest, second in Division One South, put up a good show against another Conference South side, Eastbourne Borough, at Cricklefield on Sunday but went down 3-0.
Forest were actually on top for long periods but could not create clear chances against a stubborn visiting defence.
They had the ball in the net after nine minutes, when Richard Shittu headed home from a corner, but the strike was somewhat harshly disallowed.
Having survived a great deal of pressure, Eastbourne took the lead in simple fashion after 71 minutes when Gary Elphick glanced home ahead from a corner at the near post.
Eastbourne would have run away with it had substitutes Carl Rook and Ben Watson not wasted several chances between them as Forest pushed forward, though both managed to find the net in the closing stages.
